I ain’t no Mermaid, I’m a Siren, Bitch!

We’re all familiar with the Starbucks logo. Plastered across Instagram, as Becky, 22, tells us all how without coffee she can’t even…. And don’t even try to talk to her before her morning coffee because #caffine. But what actually is the Starbucks logo? We all know it’s a mermaid but for something many of us see in our everyday in our lives – most of us don’t have a clue what it actually means.

So I set out to do a little research just to find out what the fuck this mermaid has to do about coffee.

Waaaaaay back in 1971 when Starbucks was just beginning to sprout in the town of Seattle, USA, the company made the decision that it wanted the coffee juggernaut’s logo to somehow revolve around the cities deep nautical roots. Whilst perusing for ideas they came across the Nordic legend of the Siren. A seductive, twin tailed mermaid often carved on the front prow of sailing vessels.

The company truly believed this was the branding they wanted. She would be the companies muse on the forefront of their (metaphorical) ship, pushing them ever forward. It’s actually quite thoughtful, right?

However, I don’t think Becky, 22 notices because she literally can’t function without her morning coffee…
